Food for Superheroes

A homily for Corpus Christi

I love celebrating First Holy Communion with the little kids, and what I do is I show photos, various photos of superheroes, and I’ll ask, who is this? And the kids always know, and who is this? And the kids know. And I say, who is this? And the kids know. They know all the superheroes. And the adults do too.

Everybody knows these superheroes, the DC comics superheroes, the Marvel Comics superheroes, they’re all over Hollywood these days. Then I’ll show the saints and you know, and I’ll say, who is this? And the kids know, and that is that someone will know. And who is this? And someone will know. And it’s a lot of fun. And the kids get into it because of the superheroes, and the adults get into it, too.

It’s a lot of fun. And then I’ll talk about how communion turns us into superheroes, that it’s cool that all these saints I showed, I showed like Saint Patrick, Saint Francis, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Saint Therese of Lesieux, they’re all superheroes. That’s what a saint is. A canonized saint is a superhero, and it’s the Eucharist that we feed upon that transforms us into being from just regular guy to being superhero or saint guy.

Saint Edith Stein, she’s a Carmelite. During World War Two, about that time. So maybe 75, 80 years ago, convert from Judaism. Really interesting woman. She writes, “living in a Eucharistic way means coming out of oneself, out of the narrowness of one’s life and growing into the immensity of life in Christ”. That’s what we celebrate on this feast of Corpus Christi.

It’s not Eucharist out there. It’s Eucharist transforming me from the narrowness of my mind to the immensity of life in Christ. Superhero. I think that’s what this feast of corpus Christi is all about. Becoming superheroes, becoming saints, becoming transformed into the immensity of life in Christ. Happy feast day of Corpus Christi.
